December 22, 2022Aquatic Therapy: Not Just a Day at the Pool (But It Will Feel Like It)
I am often told by patients that they vastly prefer Aquatic Physical Therapy because, “it’s so easy, and my pain is so much less while I’m in the pool”. And those patients would be right in saying that. Due to the many properties of water you will feel as though exercises are easier. However, it does not mean that your session is just another day by the pool.
It is a light and fun environment but you are able to accomplish just as much of a workout as land-based PT without ever knowing it.
Being in water allows you to feel lighter because there is less force on your joints and muscles. This allows you to more accurately feel the way you move. When you are able to feel the way your body moves you are able to correct things such as poor posture, incorrect form with exercises/tasks, and your gait quality. Such aliments can lead to increases in pain and decreases body function. By participating in Aqua Physical Therapy you can start to build range of motion and flexibility without the extra strain on your joints.
If you’re worried that by exercising in water you are sacrificing strength gains, worry not. Water provides resistance at all ranges of an exercise, something you cannot achieve on land. This allows for max muscle activation and strength building without feeling over exerted. Aqua PT also allows for progression past simple water exercises by incorporating the use of resistance bands, floating barbells/dumbbells, kickboards and more! By adding these elements you add a whole new level to what can be achieved in aqua PT. These strength and muscle endurance techniques allow you to more easily and effectively transition to Land PT and to return to your prior level of function.
No matter the injury Aqua PT can help you return to the things you want to do. So, while Aqua PT may not be just another day by the pool, it will certainly be a reason you can get back to having your toes in the water doing the things you love to do.
