Week 2

January 10, 2019 by Emma F

Healthy Eating 101 classes are available to all DHAC members. No registration is required and there is no cost to attend. You will find the current class schedule posted around DHAC. Each week covers a new topic. Ask any DHAC staff member for more information.

Week 2: The ins and outs of label reading

Here is an overview of what will be covered in this class:

healthy eating, healthy living, healthy snacking, snacking, diabetes and nutrition, diabetes and high cholesterol, diabetes and high blood pressure, health and wellness, healthy eating class, nutrition class, nutrition classes in dedham, gyms in dedham, health clubs in dedham, label reading, how to properly read labels

The nutrition facts label provides useful information about the content of packaged foods and beverages. The FDA has made some design changes and reconsidered what is listed on the label over the years. Learning to read these labels will help you make informed food choices. The class will review what is on the label (serving size, calories per serving, total fat, total carbohydrate, etc.) and how these contribute to healthy eating habits.

The group will define some of the common claims found on food packages. It will also practice how to use the facts listed on the label to meet personal nutrition goals.

Healthy Eating 101 classes are available to all DHAC members. No registration is required and there is no cost to attend. You will find the current class schedule posted around DHAC. Each week covers a new topic. Ask any DHAC staff member for more information.

Week 3: Good fats, bad fats, and cholesterol

Here is an overview of what will be covered in this class:

healthy eating, healthy living, healthy snacking, snacking, diabetes and nutrition, diabetes and high cholesterol, diabetes and high blood pressure, health and wellness, healthy eating class, nutrition class, nutrition classes in dedham, gyms in dedham, health clubs in dedham

Fats and cholesterol get a lot of attention when making food choices. And for good reason. Eating the right amount of “good” fat may help us stay healthy. While eating too many of the “bad” fats can cause a long list of health issues.

This class will define the different types of fats and help you understand which ones are beneficial and which ones are harmful. You will learn how limiting your fat intake can help you manage your weight, reduce the risk of heart disease and from developing certain types of cancer. The group will discuss how limiting fat in the diet can improve the lipid profile and share tips on how to switch out some fats for healthier options.

January 10, 2019 by Emma F

Week 4: Mindfulness – tools to help increase awareness

Here is an overview of what will be covered in this class:

When you see the word “mindfulness”, what pops into your head? You may think of ways to meditate, relax or reduce your stress. These are certainly part of being mindful. However, when we talk about mindfulness in relation to the food we are shaping a different set of behaviors. These behaviors focus on how we approach and eat our food.

This class will teach you how to consider your mood, environment, routine and common distractions that interfere with your attempt to eat well. The group will discuss what cues have a negative influence on their eating patterns and problem solve on how to make positive changes.
